Bioenergy

H2H Saltend

H2H Saltend is a low-carbon hydrogen production project led by Equinor and the anchor project of the Zero Carbon Humber initiative. Located at Saltend Chemicals Park near Hull, in northeast England, the facility will produce blue hydrogen from natural gas using carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology. The project is designed to supply low-carbon hydrogen to industrial users, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 900,000 tonnes per year while supporting the decarbonization of the Humber industrial cluster and the UK’s transition to a net-zero economy.

Aegean Refinery Project (ARP)

The Aegean Refinery Project, officially known as the SOCAR STAR Oil Refinery, is an oil refinery located in Aliaga, Turkey. It is the largest refinery project in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) with a processing capacity of ten million tonnes (Mt) of crude oil a year, which is equivalent to 214,000 barrels a day. STAR Refinery meets approximately 20% of Turkey’s demand for processed crude oil products and reduces the country’s petroleum products imports.

H2GS — Sweden — 2.1 MTPY HDRI and BRI Plant

H2 Green Steel was launched in 2021 in Boden, northern Sweden, is designed to produce 2.1 million tonnes per year of hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) and hot briquetted iron (HBI) using fossil-free hydrogen-based direct reduction technology. The project aims to decarbonize steel production by replacing fossil fuels with renewable hydrogen during the iron reduction process. Integrated with an electric arc furnace (EAF), the plant is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions from ironmaking by up to 95% compared with conventional blast furnace technology, supporting the production of near-zero-emission steel. The start of production is planned in 2026.
